Malawi
The Republic of Malawi is situated in Southern Africa. The country is bordered by Mozambique, Tanzania and Zambia. Lilongwe is the capital. Blantyre, is the largest city in Malawi which is also an important commercial and industrial centre.
The British made Malawi known as Nyasaland during that time, a protectorate in 1890, despite opposition from the African people . Between 1953 and 1963 Nyasaland, Southern Rhodesia (later Zimbabwe) and Northern Rhodesia (later Zambia) were members of the Federation of Central Africa. Nyasaland (Malawi) and Northern Rhodesia (Zambia) gained independence, soon after the Federation dissolved in 1964. It became a republic in 1966.
While the majority of the people are dependent on agriculture for a living, the economy of the country survives on aid from World Bank. Major export crops are tobacco, coffee, tea, sugar and cotton. Other agricultural produce includes maize, wheat, sorghum, millet, rice, pulses, cassava, potatoes and groundnuts. The country’s industry is agriculture-based. It includes fishing, mining, timber, light engineering, construction, chemicals, fertilizers, food processing and textiles. Tourism industry is being developed to increase its contribution to the economy.
English and Chichewa are both official languages of the country. Majority of the people are Christians – some are Muslims and some Malawians believe in indigenous religions.
Introduced by the Portuguese in the 18th century, Maize is the staple food in Malawi. Other crops grown include cassava (a root vegetable which can be made into a "porridge"), sweet potatoes, potatoes, pumpkins and peanuts. Fish, such as chambo, is eaten. During drought, villagers eat food that grows wild: millet, okra, berries and fruit. Fruit from baobab trees can be used to make porridge. Beer is brewed locally.
