Madagascar

The first known inhabitants of Madagascar were probably from present-day Indonesia, who came to the country nearly two thousand years ago. The Arabs have also done trading along the coasts during the 17th century. The Republic of Madagascar is situated in Southern Africa. It consists of the world's fourth largest island and some smaller islands in the Indian Ocean, east of Mozambique. Antananarivo is the capital.

The first Europeans who settled in the island were the Portuguese in 1500. Then in 1896, the French declared the island as a French Colony, which in 1946 became an Overseas Territory of France. Independence was achieved, as the Malagasy Republic, in 1960.

Agriculture, fishing and forestry are the main revenue earners of the country. Eco-tourism is getting renewed attention as an industry with high potential for growth. Agricultural products are vanilla, cloves, sugarcane, coffee, cocoa, rice, cassava, beans, bananas and groundnuts (peanuts). Malagasy, of Malayo-Polynesian origin, is the official language of Madagascar. French is also spoken. Nearly 50% of the people follow indigenous beliefs. Majority of the rest are Christians with a minority of Muslims.

Rice is a staple food in Madagascar. It is often served with stew, fish, chicken, meat and vegetables. Maize, cassava and sweet potatoes are popular with the people.
