The Republic of Liberia is situated in Western Africa, bordered by Sierra Leone, Guinea, Cote d'Ivoire and the North Atlantic Ocean. There are around sixteen ethnic groups in Liberia's indigenous population, each with its own traditions and culture. Monrovia is the capital.
Resettlement of freed American slaves began in 1822, promoted by The American Colonization Society. Till 1980, these Americo-Liberians, though a minority of the population, were the dominant group in Liberia. Following years of civil wars and political unrest towards the end of 2005, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf won the Liberian presidential elections. She became the first woman elected as an African head of state.
The economy of the country has had to suffer major setbacks due to the series of civil wars which ruined the infrastructure. Diamond exports fall under the internal sanction rules now. These precious stones were earlier sold to purchase armaments. Agriculture sector is the largest employer of the country with crops like coffee, cocoa, rice, cassava, palm oil, sugarcane, and bananas. Industries include hydropower, mining, rubber processing, and palm oil processing.
While English is the official language, there are sixteen local languages which are spoken. Majority of the people are Christians followed by Muslim and people having indigenous beliefs.
Rice eaten with meat or fish sauces is the staple food in Liberia. The traditional dish of the country is Fufu, made from cassava. Soups and stews are popular. The cooking medium used is Palm oil. The vegetables available include aubergines, cabbages, carrots, cassava, okra, peppers, plantains, pumpkins and sweet potatoes.
