Lesotho
The landlocked Kingdom of Lesotho situated in Africa, is completely surrounded by South Africa. The capital of the kingdom is Maseru.
Lesotho, known as Basutoland, was annexed by the British in South Africa in 1871 and became a British colony in 1884. Independence was achieved in 1966 with Moshoeshoe II the king of the Kingdom of Lesotho. He was succeeded by his son, King Letsie III. Lesotho retained links with the United Kingdom as a member of the Commonwealth.
Responsible for generating maximum income for the country, water, often referred to as ‘white gold’, is the most important resource of the country. The Lesotho Highlands Water Project, which started in 2004, supplies water to South Africa. Agriculture employs the maximum number of people. Products are barley, maize, pulses, sorghum and wheat. Industries include construction, clothing, textiles, handicrafts, food processing and beverages. Tourism and money sent by citizens working the mines of South Africa, are important contributors to the economy.
There are two official languages in Lesotho - English and Sesotho. While majority of the people are Christians, a minority follow indigenous beliefs.
Bread, potatoes and rice are staple foods of the country. Boiled corn meal is made into a dish called "papa". Wild spinach can be found in a number of places.
Mutton, chicken and eggs and freshwater fish are popular with the people. So are
fried cakes, similar to doughnuts. Beer is brewed locally in Lesotho.
