Guinea Bissau
Music is an integral part of Guinean Culture. The music of Guinea-Bissau, in particular Creole music known as gumbe, has been brought to an international arena by Manecas Costa. The country is formally called the Republic of Guinea-Bissau. It is located in Western Africa, bordered by Senegal, Guinea, and the North Atlantic Ocean. Bissau is the capital.
During the fifteenth century, the Portuguese had explored present-day Guinea-Bissau, and the Cape Verde islands and they were administered jointly by the Portuguese. Present-day Guinea-Bissau became a separate Portuguese Colony in 1870. Portuguese Guinea was made a province of Portugal in 1951. Portuguese possessions gained independence in 1974.
Agriculture and fishing are the two main sources of revenue for the country. Cashew nuts, peanuts, and palm kernels are important crops for exports. Other food crops are rice, maize, cassava, and beans. Resources are fish, timber, phosphates, bauxite, clay, granite, and limestone. Off-shore oil prospecting is in progress.
There are many languages used in the country other than Portuguese which is the official language. This includes Creole and several indigenous languages like Balanta-Kentohe, Mandinka, Mandjak, Pulaar, and Pepel.
The population is divided nearly equally between indigenous believers and Muslims. A minority of people are Christians.
Rice, maize, millet and cassava (manioc) are the staple foods in Guinea-Bissau.
Sauces made with ingredients such as peanuts, onions, tomatoes, and fish are often served with the main meal. Palm oil is used in cooking. Vegetables and fruits include peppers, squash, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, plantains, bananas, coconuts, mangoes, melons, and papayas. Palm wine is a local drink.
