Guinea

The West African country called The Republic of Guinea is bordered by the North Atlantic Ocean, Guinea-Bissau, Senegal, Mali, Cote d'Ivoire, Liberia and Sierra Leone. Conakry is the capital city and an important port. Three important rivers - Gambia, Niger and Senegal, originate from Guinea.

The French had controlled Guinea from middle of the nineteenth century and French Guinea became part of French West Africa. The present boundaries of the country were set by France, Britain and Portugal at the turn of the 20th century. Guinea achieved independence from France in 1958. The architecture of Conakry reflects the French Colonial era, as well as interests shown by the Soviets (USSR) and the Chinese in the country.

The agricultural sector though is a small contributor towards the national economy, it is the largest employer. Agricultural products are bananas, pineapples, palm nuts, cassava, sweet potatoes, rice and coffee. Fish are exported. Guinea is a major exporter of bauxite. The country’s resources include iron ore, diamonds, gold, uranium, hydropower and salt.

After so many years of French colonialism, it is natural that French is the official language in Guinea. Many of the population speak indigenous languages such as Susu, Pular and Malinke. While majority of the people are Muslim, there is a minority of Christians and believers of traditional ethics.

One of the most popular dishes in Guinea is maize soup. Rice, served with sauce and vegetables, is another staple food. Sauces are made with groundnuts, okra, and tomatoes to which fish and meat are sometimes added. Vegetables are aubergines, beans, cabbages, carrots, cassava, onions, peppers, plantains and yams. Millet and sorghum are also cultivated. Coffee is grown in Guinea. Soft drinks and beer are produced locally.
