Ghana
A flat country with a hilly coastal plain, the Republic of Ghana is situated in West Africa. It is bordered by Cote d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Togo and the Atlantic Ocean.
Accra, on the coast, is the capital city. The River Volta is Ghana's longest river. One of the high points of interest of the country is the Akosombo hydroelectric dam, built in 1964, which created Lake Volta, one of the world's largest artificial lakes.
The Portuguese were amongst the first Europeans to arrive in Ghana, followed by the Dutch, British and French. Towards the end of the 19th century, the British gained control over the country. Independence was achieved in 1957. the country has witnessed a number of military coups during the 30 years from 1966 and 1996.
Agriculture provides employment for the majority of the people. The main item for export in the agricultural sector is cocoa. Other others in this sector are maize, rice, sorghum, millet, cassava, yams, cocoa, coffee, groundnuts (peanuts), shea nuts, coconuts, bananas and citrus fruit. Timber and gold are other important exports. Industries include fishing, timber, small commercial ship building, aluminum smelting, light manufacturing and food processing.
Though English is the official language, there are many African languages which are used in Ghana, including Ewe, Ga, Twi, Fanti, Dagbani, Nzima and Hausa. Majority of the people are Christians followed by, Muslims and those who follow indigenous beliefs.
The Ghanaian diet is not complete without thick soups and stews. A variety of meat is eaten with rice and vegetables. Fish and other sea foods are available in plenty in the coastal areas. People who live in villages grow cassava, maize, plantains and yams. Other vegetables include carrots, okra, onions, peppers, potatoes, and squash.
There are many types of fruits which are available, including bananas, citrus fruits, coconuts, mangoes, papayas, pineapples and watermelons.
