Gabon
Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon and Republic of the Congo, the Gabonese Republic is situated in Western Africa. Libreville is the capital city. It has a very modern look with skyscrapers, stylish hotels, and apartment blocks. The Presidential Palace, built in the 1970s, is a major tourist attraction in the capital.
A French settlement was established in 1839, and a French governor to Gabon was appointed in 1866.
Gabon was home to French settlement since 1839. In 1910 Gabon formed part of the Federation of French Equatorial Africa - Afrique Equatoriale Francaise (AEF). The country gained independence in 1960. Almost half of the country’s economy depends on earnings from offshore oil, discovered in 1970s. Other resources include
Natural gas, hydropower, manganese, uranium, gold, niobium, iron ore, diamonds, and timber. Though the agricultural sector hardly generates any revenue for the country, it offers employment opportunities to more than half of the population.
Agricultural products include cocoa, coffee, sugar, palm oil and rubber.
Though French is the official language, there are many local languages used which include Fang, Bapounou, Bandjabi, Myene and Nzebi. The country consists of Christians, Muslims and people having animist beliefs.
The staple food of Gabon is Cassava (manioc). Fufu, a dish made from cassava, is a traditional food. Cassava is eaten with peanut paste, and used in sauces and stews. Other Gabonese dishes include meat and fish stews. Vegetables available are aubergines, plantains, peppers, squashes, taro, tomatoes and yams. Beer, palm wine, and alcohol from sugarcane are produced locally.
The climate of Gabon is topical in nature – hot and humid.
