Equatorial Guinea

Consisting of Rio Muni, the mainland, and a number of islands including Annobon, Bioko and Corisco, the Republic of Equatorial Guinea is situated in Western Africa. The mainland is bordered by the Bight of Biafra, Cameroon and Gabon. Malabo, the capital, is on Bioko. Bata is the largest town on the mainland.

Historical background of this country is complex. When Portugal ceded Bioko, known as Fernando Po, to Spain in 1778, it was followed by the Spanish colonizing the mainland (Rio Muni), in the 1840s. About 100 years later, Fernando Po and Rio Muni united to form the Western African Territories in 1904. Later the name was changed to Spanish Guinea. Spanish Guinea achieved independence in 1968 and came to be known as the Republic of Equatorial Guinea. Ever since the development of offshore oil reserves in the ‘90s, it has become a major economic contributor for the country. Other resources include natural gas, diamonds, gold, bauxite, tantalum, sand, gravel and clay. Major sources of livelihood in the country include subsistence farming, fishing, and forestry. Agricultural products are coffee, cocoa, rice, cassava, yams, bananas and palm oil nuts.

While Spanish and French are official languages, Pidgin English is spoken. Local languages include Fang, Bubi, and Ibo. Most of the people are Christians, predominantly Roman Catholics.

Fish or meat often accompanies cassava, a staple food in Equatorial Guinea. Rice is also eaten. Leafy vegetables, sweet potatoes, yams, plantains, bananas, coconuts, mangoes and pineapples are grown and are popular. Beer, palm wine, and alcohol which is sugarcane-based, are produced locally.
