Djibouti
The Republic of Djibouti is situated in Eastern Africa. Hot and humid with very little rainfall, much of the country is volcanic desert. It is bordered by Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea. The capital is the city of Djibouti.
One of the greatest tourist attractions of Djibouti is the Presidential Palace which overlooks the harbor.
After the Second World War, the territory called French Somaliland became an Overseas Territory within the French Union. This was renamed the French Territory of the Afars and the Issas, which gained independence from the French in 1977. Djibouti was the country’s new name.
The location of Djibouti is strategic, from the point of shipping. It falls on the route where the Red Sea meets the Gulf of Aden. The transport facilities of this country manage various import and exports of several landlocked countries of Africa. The economy completely depends on the service sector. Since the country does not have much land fit for agriculture, most of its foods are imported. There is a small percentage of income generated by industries, such as construction, salt, and agricultural processing.
Both Arabic and French are official languages. Other languages spoken are Somali and Afar. Majority of the people are Muslims.
Authentic Djibouti cuisine consists of meat and dairy products. Urban food is influenced by the French and other European cuisines. French baguettes are popular. Vegetables and fruits available include carrots, cabbages, green beans, onions, potatoes, tomatoes, citrus fruits, dates, mangoes, papayas, pineapples, and watermelons.
