Chad
France invaded the landlocked country of Chad at the end of the nineteenth century and in the early part of the twentieth century Chad became one of four territories of the Federation of French Equatorial Africa. Chad was made an Overseas Territory of France in 1946 gaining independence in 1960. The Republic of Chad is situated in Central Africa. It is bordered by Cameroon, Nigeria, Niger, Libya, Sudan, and the Central African Republic. N'Djamena is the capital. There are around two hundred ethnic groups in Chad, each with its own traditions and culture.
Following independence, Chad suffered many years of ethnic warfare, a Libyan invasion and regular droughts. Majority of the population are engaged in subsistence farming, herding and fishing. The country exports cotton, cattle, gum Arabic, and smoked and dried fish. Other agricultural products are millet, sorghum, rice, potatoes, manioc and peanuts. From 2000, Chad has become an oil exporting country via an underground pipeline to tankers in coastal Cameroon.
There are over one hundred and twenty languages and dialects in Chad.
French and Arabic are the official languages. The south speaks a language called Sara. The country consists of Muslim, Christians and animists. They live in specific regions of the country.
Region and ethnic group influence the cuisine of Chad. Millet and sorghum are staple foods. The usual meal consists of porridge made from millet and sorghum flour and eaten with vegetable, meat, or fish sauce. Peanut sauce is also popular in some areas. Rice is eaten with fish and meat dishes. You could find French baguettes in urban areas. Soft drinks are produced locally. In the south, millet is used to produce beer and spirits.
