Cameroon

The Republic of Cameroon is located in West Africa. It is bordered by Nigeria, Chad, Central African Republic, Republic of the Congo, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea and the Bight of Biafra (Atlantic Ocean). While Yaounde is the capital, Douala is the country's commercial centre and major port. Cameroon is divided into ten provinces.

Following the First World War, administration of Cameroon was divided between the British and the French. In 1960, French Cameroon achieved independence and became the Republic of Cameroon. In 1961 British Cameroon joined the Republic to become the Federal Republic of Cameroon. Following a referendum in 1972, Cameroon became the United Republic of Cameroon. The name changed to the Republic of Cameroon in 1984.

The agricultural sector provides employment for majority of the working people. Products include bananas, cocoa, coffee, grains and oilseed. Cotton and rubber are also produced. Industry has a minority share in the economy of the country. Industries are petroleum, aluminum, timber, ship repair, consumer goods, textiles and food processing.

Though English and French are official languages, there are many African languages which are spoken. Majority of the people either have indigenous beliefs or are Christians. Twenty percent of the population are Muslims.

Cuisine varies according to regions in Cameroon. Fufu, made from cassava, is a traditional food. Soups such as peanut soup are popular. Other dishes include meat and vegetable stews. Sauces are made from ingredients such as ginger, onions, peppers, tomatoes and fish. Rice along with vegetables like okra, plantains, squashes, spinach and sweet potatoes make popular dishes. Coffee and tea are grown. Beer and palm wine are produced locally.
