Burundi
The landlocked Republic of Burundi is situated in Central Africa. It is bordered by Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda and Tanzania. Bujumbura is the capital. The climate of Burundi is equatorial.
The Twa (a Pygmy people) are the earliest known inhabitants of Burundi. After the First World War, Ruanda-Urundi (Rwanda and Burundi), was administered by Belgium as a League of Nations Trust Territory. These two separated in 1962 and Urundi became the Kingdom of Burundi. This was followed by civil war which began in 1993, and lasted over ten years. In 2003, an agreement to end the civil war was signed.
Agriculture is the mainstay for the majority of people in the country. Foreign exchange is earned through coffee and tea exports. Other agricultural products include maize, sorghum, rice, manioc, sweet potatoes, bananas, sugarcane, and cotton. Industries are mining, hydropower, construction, assembly of imported components, soap, shoes, blankets, textiles, food processing and beverages.
French and Kirundi are both official languages. Swahili is spoken along Lake Tanganyika and in the Bujumbura area. Majority of the people are Christians while there is a small minority of Muslims. Others are indigenous believers.
Beans, rice, maize, and cassava are staple foods in Burundi. Porridge and pancakes are made from cassava and sorghum flour. Fish is also available. Fruits sold are bananas, citrus fruits, mangoes, papayas and pineapples. Beer made from bananas or sorghum is brewed locally.
