Botswana

Botswana was earlier known as Bechuanaland which became a British Protectorate in 1885. the country became independent in 1966, and came to be known as the Republic of Botswana.
Botswana's economy has shown a steady growth since independence. The discovery of diamond in 1967 was one of the most important turning points in the history of wealth creation in the country. Other mineral resources include coal, copper, iron ore, nickel, salt and silver. Factors affecting the economy positively are vehicle manufacturing, subsistence farming and the production of beef. Financial services and tourism are important contributors to the economy.
English and Setswana are the two most important languages in the country. Majority of the people are Christians.
Porridge made from millet and sorghum are staple foods.
Meat stew with beef, goat, mutton, lamb and chicken are popular. Fish and vegetables like bean leaves, spinach, cabbage, onions, potatoes, pumpkins and tomatoes are popular with the population. Many recipes use groundnuts as an ingredient. Water melons and a type of melon called lerotse are grown.
Popular drinks include local millet and sorghum beer, palm wine and a ginger non-alcoholic drink.
