Today, oil is a major contributor to the economy, the services sector playing a minor role. Subsistence farming provides a living for much of the population. Agricultural products are bananas, plantains, cassava, vegetables, corn, sugarcane, coffee, tobacco, sisal and cotton. Major industries are petroleum, diamond mining, metal products, ship repair, textiles, tobacco products, sugar, brewing and fish processing.
Though Portuguese is the official language, Bantu and other indigenous languages are spoken. Nearly half the population follow indigenous beliefs. Rest of the people either Christians.
Traditional cuisine of Angola consists of fish and meat calulu (layers of fish or meat and vegetables) and palm oil beans. Corn funge, made with cornflour is served with fish and meat sauces. Farofa, prepared with manioc (cassava) flour, also accompanies meals. Soft drinks are produced. Maize beer and palm wine are favorite alcoholic drinks.
