Protecting Your Property When you Move
Moving Insurance
When choosing a moving
company to transport your belongings to your
new home, you’ll want to make sure that
the mover you choose has adequate moving
insurance. Any reliable moving company
provides some sort of moving insurance.
When contacting a
potential moving company about insurance,
you should make sure to ask them what kind
of insurance they provide, but you should
have some information before you call. There
are three different types of insurance that
movers provide. All three types of insurance
are based on the value of your goods.
Declared Value
insurance is based on the weight of your
belongings multiplied by a specified amount
per pound of your items. This is the most
basic insurance provided by moving
companies, and is optimal if you have few
valuables to transport.
Lump Sum Value
insurance is based on the value of your
belongings rather than their weight. If you
choose this option, you and the moving
company will have to come to an agreement on
the total amount that your belongings are
worth and sign a contract.
If you need even more
protection for your belongings, than Full
Protection liability insurance might be the
best choice for you. If you choose this type
of coverage, your belongings will be covered
for any damaged, lost or destroyed items.
With this coverage, the movers will replace
your belongings.
Make sure the mover you
choose provides your insurance coverage in
writing. The Better Business Bureau can also
inform you how the
movers have fared in the
past in response to any insurance claims.
You may also be able to supplement any
insurance your mover offers you with your
homeowners’ insurance. You should call
them up and ask if they provide any sort of
mover’s liability insurance.
Before you choose a
moving insurance policy that’s
right for you, you should take a general
appreciation of all of the belongings you
plan on moving. This way, you won’t pay
for an insurance that you don’t need.
